About Naval Academy

Established on April 26, 1955, by the Ministry of National Defense, Naval Academy (Vietnamese: Học viện Hải quân) is a premier military academy directly under the administration of the Vietnam People's Navy (Hoc vien Hai quan, 2015, 2019). Situated in the coastal city of Nha Trang at 30 Tran Phu Street, the academy has stood as the nation's foremost center for naval education, scientific research, and strategic training for 70 years. Its history began as the Coastal Training School. Following a journey of five name changes (1959: Naval Training School; 1961: Naval School of Vietnam; 1967: Naval Officers School; 1980: School of Commander Naval engineering; and since 1993: Học viện Hải quân), it was officially designated as the Naval Academy in 1993 (Học viện Hải quân, 2019). The first course graduated 400 cadets just three months after establishment (Học viện Hải quân, 2019). Today, the academy continues to produce core leadership for the Vietnam People's Navy, having trained generations of officers and technical staff across specialized fields such as navigation, artillery‑missile, mine‑torpedo, marine engineering, communications, and naval political affairs (Học viện Hải quân, 2015).

To date, after 55 years of construction, combat and growth, Naval Academy has trained thousands of officers and technical staff for major specialized fields such as: control vessel; mines - anti-mine; missile anti-submarine; gunship; information; radar - sonar; coastal radar; ship factory and power; the commander of the Vietnam Coast Guard and Border Defense Force (Học viện Hải quân, 2015). In addition, Naval Academy has trained officers for the Royal Cambodian Navy and the Lao People's Navy (Học viện Hải quân, 2015; Wikipedia, 2011).

Vision

Naval Academy aspires to solidify its position as Vietnam’s leading center for military education, training, and scientific research, progressively building a modern, disciplined, and exemplary institution (Học viện Hải quân, 2015). This vision ensures that the academy’s training quality directly translates into the combat readiness of naval units, meeting the critical requirements of protecting Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty in the new era.

Mission

Naval Academy serves as the training and scientific research center of the Army and the Navy, with the primary task of developing military officers at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its core missions include (Học viện Hải quân, 2015; Wikipedia, 2011):

• Training naval officers with bachelor’s degrees.

• Training postgraduate degrees for commanding officers and technical staff.

• Training master’s and PhDs in military science.

• Researching naval military science.

Core Values

At the heart of Naval Academy's educational philosophy is the traditional 16‑word motto awarded by the Navy Party Committee:

“Tích cực chủ động; Khắc phục khó khăn; Đoàn kết kỷ luật; Dạy tốt học tốt”. (Hoc vien Hai quan, 2019)

These values have guided the academy through decades of combat and construction. The academy also emphasizes strong political courage, creativity, responsibility, self‑reliance, and close integration of theory with practice.

Faculty of Basic Sciences and Foreign Languages

The academy's academic structure includes the Faculty of Basic Sciences and Foreign Languages. Established in September 1979, this faculty provides foundational education in natural sciences, information technology, and foreign languages across all training programs (Học viện Hải quân, 2011).

The faculty is organized into six specialized departments: Mathematics, General Physics, General Chemistry, English, Russian, and Informatics. Its faculty members are recognized for their strong political qualities, exemplary pedagogical style, and professional expertise; to date, two of its lecturers have been honored with the title of “Nhà giáo Ưu tú” by the State. The faculty has also received a Certificate of Merit from the Ministry of National Defense (2008) and the Prime Minister (2011) for its outstanding contributions to military training and national defense.

The faculty is actively engaged in international cooperation and academic exchange. In April 2026, within the practicum program of the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature (USSH, VNU‑HCM), the two faculties signed a cooperation agreement in language training, which includes lecturer exchange, joint course development, and the application of digital transformation in teaching (Đại học Khoa học Xã hội và Nhân văn, 2026).
